'EastEnders' scoops awards hat-trick

'EastEnders' picked up a hat-trick of awards tonight at a celebrity-filled showbiz bash.

The soap came out on top at the TV Choice Awards at the Savoy Hotel in central London.

It was named best soap and stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace, who play husband and wife Alfie and Kat Moon in the show, won best soap actor and actress respectively.

But Wallace was notably absent from the event – after weeks of tabloid speculation following the cancellation of her wedding to Vincent Morse.

According to reports, the actress dumped her fiance after he sent explicit pictures of her to a former lover.

The awards also recognised 'EastEnders' ITV rival 'Coronation Street' with Paula Lane, who plays Kylie Platt, winning the prize for best soap newcomer and the dramatic tram crash that marked the show’s 50th anniversary named best soap storyline.

The event, presented by comic Ben Miller, was a good night for 'Doctor Who' writer Steven Moffat with the long-running science fiction show named best family drama and 'Sherlock', which he co-writes with Mark Gatiss, named best new drama.

There was another award for 'Doctor Who' when Karen Gillan, who plays the timelord’s sidekick Amy Pond, won best actress.

A former time lord, David Tennant, was named best actor for his role in 'Single Father'.

BBC3’s 'Being Human' got the gong for best drama series, while 'The Inbetweeners' won the best comedy award.
