Villagers among nominees for song awards

Three tracks which failed to even dent the top 100 singles chart are up for a top title as the year’s best song at the Ivor Novello awards today.

'MY KZ, UR BF' by Everything Everything, 'Spanish Sahara' by Foals and 'Becoming A Jackal' by Irish band Villagers are in the running for the prize for best song musically and lyrically.

The well-established awards reward the finest compositions of the past year.

Mercury Prize winners The XX are nominated for another leading category best contemporary song for their track 'Islands', along with Tinie Tempah’s 'Pass Out' and Katy B’s 'Katy On A Mission'.

Everything Everything are also nominated for the album award alongside Bombay Bicycle Club and Plan B.

Rapper-turned-soul crooner Plan B’s song 'She Said' is also competing for the most performed work award along with Kylie Minogue and Scouting For Girls.

The annual awards – now in their 56th year – are voted for by songwriters and composers themselves.

There will also be a number of honorary awards handed out at the event in London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.
