Arnold Schwarzenegger has thanked his friends and family for their support in his first public appearance since separating from his wife.

The actor-turned-politician, who has been married to Maria Shriver for 25 years, announced their separation on Monday.

Speaking at an Israeli Independence Day celebration in Los Angeles, Schwarzenegger said he was grateful for support and said the couple "still love each other very much" and said they felt fortunate to have "four extraordinary children".

He said they were taking the separation "one day at a time".
