'Snap' powerful and disturbing

Director Carmel Winters storms home with this brilliantly disturbing mock-doc that sets up all manner of avenues for exploration but is intriguingly clever enough to then point you another way.

The film began life as a trainer for counsellors and then morphed into a solo stage play, taking the form of a documentary being made with the reluctant mother – Sandra (the stunningly brilliant O’Sullivan) – of a teenage boy – Stephen (the equally compelling Moran) – who kidnapped and held prisoner a toddler.

The film leaves the viewer with much to decide for yourself and it’s the sort of film that might well attract you back for another look since you will wonder if you really have sorted out what you thought you saw.

Another triumphant entry into the growing power of Irish documentary moviemaking and the emergence of a talented writer-director.
