'Rio' should please everyone

A real animation charmer based on a well-written script that doesn’t skimp on a strong storyline and defined characters, nor on a funny stream of snappy one-liners that will appeal to the kiddies and the adults.

Director: Carlos Saldanha

Cast: (Voices) Jesse Eisenbrug, Leslie Mann, Anne Hathaway

Cert: G

A real animation charmer based on a well-written script that doesn’t skimp on a strong storyline and defined characters, nor on a funny stream of snappy one-liners that will appeal to the kiddies and the adults.

It’s from the 'Ice Age' team and doesn’t let the current crop of quality animated films down, thanks largely to the big-name stars lending their voices to the colourful characters.

Blu, a Macaw (Eisenberg), is the wimpy bird moved fresh out of the egg from his native South America to Minnesota. He’s your typical, fumbling guy who is returned to Rio de Janeiro to meet – and possible mate with – the more adventurous and glamorous Jewel (Hathaway) who introduces him to a life of mad adventures filled with comical characters and some danger from nasty bird kidnappers.

It’s a rollicking and consistently entertaining film that is guaranteed to please everyone.

Star Rating: 4/5
