'Cave of the Forgotten Dreams 3D' a remarkable documentary
Director: Werner Herzog
Cast: Werner Herzog, Jean Clottes, Dominique Baffier
Cert: G
The interesting thing about Herzog’s fascinating documentary about the Chauvet Caves in Southern France which contain around 400 of the world’s oldest rock paintings depicting humans is that 3D doesn’t add anything to what we are seeing.
Herzog was granted exclusive permission by the French Government to film the 23-30,000-year-old paintings, very carefully and with limited equipment, inside the caves which were, amazingly, discovered as recently as 1994.
He makes a wonderful job of it, too. Here we have a film of a subject you’re never likely to see at first hand, so closely protected are the paintings.
And so remarkable are they that even 3D can’t do them full justice.
