Adele stays top of UK charts
Adele held on to her historic double today with her single and album staying at number one, while Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow followed her husband into the charts.
The heartfelt hit 'Someone Like You' soared to the top spot last week in the wake of Adele’s acclaimed Brit Awards performance.
Today she retained the number one slot in the albums chart for a fifth week with her second album, '21'.
Meanwhile Oscar-winning actress Paltrow – married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin – secured two top 40 singles following her appearance on TV show 'Glee'.
Her medley of Rihanna’s 'Umbrella' and 'Singing In The Rain' entered the singles chart at number 22, while a cover of Cee-Lo Green’s chart-topper 'Forget You' reached 31, the Official Charts Company said.
Paltrow proved to be a download hit after viewers of More 4 saw her perform a handful of tracks with the cast of the musical comedy-drama series.
The Glee cast also stormed into the album charts with their offering 'Glee: The Music, Volume 4'.
But the glory was, again, all Adele’s, with her debut album '19' moving up two places from four to two, while her other single Rolling In The Deep remained at the number four spot.
Adele’s earlier single, a cover of Bob Dylan’s 'Make You Feel My Love', dropped one place from 24 to 25.
The singer-songwriter last week became the first living artist to achieve the feat of two top five hits in both the Official Singles Chart and the Official Albums Chart simultaneously since The Beatles.
Former number one single holder, Brit-winning songbird Jessie J, remained at number two with her hit Price Tag featuring B.O.B.
Rihanna meanwhile climbed three places to number three with her single S&M.
For the second week running, 'Someone Like You' sold more than 110,000 copies.
Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said: “Adele is proving to truly be the star of 2011. Her album has already become the must-have release of the year and for Someone Like You to top 100,000 sales for two successive weeks demonstrates what a huge hit it is.”
