‘Hereafter’ a thoughtful exploration of mortality

Eastwood continues to explore the outer boundaries of moviemaking and though, as here, he doesn’t always succeed, his work is never short of compellingly thoughtful.

It has been suggested that with this unusual film, Eastwood is facing his own mortality.

Be that as it may, his consideration of life, death and what may lie beyond carries us into a globetrotting drama where three stories are laced together with, thankfully, no concrete conclusions drawn by the director.

The three chief characters are George (Damon), a blue-collar American; Marie (De France), a French journalist and London schoolboy Marcus (Frankie McLaren, with George as his twin brother) who each face the dilemmas of the tragedy of death and the chance of there being something after it.

A film that makes you think.
