'Season of the Witch' worth watching

Director: Dominic Sena

Cast: Nicolas Cage, Stephen Graham, Ron Pearlman

Knights, witches, monks, a dangerous journey, a trial … and the Black Plague. You can’t say there isn’t enough going on in this period adventure.

Cage, with the sort of haircut you shouldn’t ask your barber to inflict upon you, plays a Knight newly back from the Crusades to his plague-blighted homeland, a misfortune the monks blame on a witch.

Said monks, since this is the 14th century when minds were distinctly narrow, order her to be taken to a trial, a journey that is long and dangerous … and what will the outcome of the coming trial be?

Cage is, as always, a difficult actor to pin down – you either love him or otherwise – and several of his recent films have not done him any favours, but even in indifferent films – as this one is, a curate’s egg of good in parts – he’s always worth watching.
