Phillippe 'very happy' for engaged ex Witherspoon

Ryan Phillippe has congratulated ex-wife Reese Witherspoon on her new engagement.

The ‘Cruel Intentions’ actor – who has two children, Ava, 11, and seven-year-old Deacon with the star – explained he was “very happy” for Reese and her fiancé, Hollywood agent Jim Toth.

In a statement to the New York Daily News newspaper, he said: “I am very happy for both Reese and Jim. I wish nothing but the best for the mother of my children.”

However, 36-year-old Phillippe – who was married to Witherspoon for seven years and is now believed to be dating ‘Mamma Mia!’ star Amanda Seyfried – recently admitted he still has “complicated” feelings about the couple’s 2007 divorce.

He explained: “I still have sadness and complicated feelings about my divorce. But how beneficial is it to keep hanging onto those feelings? If someone lives through an accident, his aim is to become better and healthy.

“My aim is always to progress - to make better decisions and be a better father, a better boyfriend, a better husband if it happens again, a better friend, a better actor."

Witherspoon and Toth got engaged over the Christmas period, the 34-year-old actress’ spokesperson confirmed earlier this week.

The impending nuptials are said to be supported by Witherspoon’s children.

One insider said: "Ava and Deacon are happy with him."
