'Despicable Me' clever and inventive

An animated treat that’s packed with wonderfully off-centre characters (going down to the supporting roles), a battery of evil devices, laughter from the downright silly to the downright falling down and rolling in the aisles … you couldn’t ask for more.

An animated treat that’s packed with wonderfully off-centre characters (going down to the supporting roles), a battery of evil devices, laughter from the downright silly to the downright falling down and rolling in the aisles … you couldn’t ask for more.

And throw in the ever-talented Carell, lending his voice to the character of Gru, a hard-boiled villain who’s really a softie deep down inside, even if he does plan the greatest heist in history … he wants to steal the moon!

His big mistake is in enlisting the aid of orphans Margo, Agnes and Edith, a trio of little charmers who see him as Dad material.

There’s lots going on in this clever and inventive yarn and all of it a complete delight.
