Sigourney Weaver has signed up for new movie 'Rampart'.

The 'Alien' actress joins Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, Cynthia Nixon, Anne Heche and Robin Wright in the Oren Moverman-directed film.

The crime drama tells the tale of a fictional police veteran, who is caught up with corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and follows his attempts to find some redemption.

Although the main character is fictional, the story is based on the scandal that shook the department in the 90s.

Moverman has also written the script, along with legendary crime writer James Ellroy and the film will also star Ben Foster and Ice Cube, Variety reports.

As well as signing up for 'Rampart', Sigourney recently revealed she is "glad" Ridley Scott is directing the 'Alien' prequel.

The 60-year-old star - who played tough heroine Ellen Ripley in the movie franchise - won't appear in the film but thinks the ideas behind the forthcoming sci-fi epic, which is set 30 years before the original movie, will make for interesting viewing.

Sigourney said: "I'm glad it's in his hands. I always said if you're going to do another one, go back to the planet where they came from so I certainly think it's a great idea.

"I'll be excited to see it. I think he's an amazing director and I always felt very incomplete because we didn't know where they came from and so we're going to find out I hope."

Sigourney's character was killed off in 'Alien 3', but was brought back to life for the fourth instalment in 'Alien Resurrection'.
