'Soul Boy' gives authentic view of local soul movement
Director: Shimmy Marcus
Cast: Martin Compston, Patt Shortt, Nichola Burley, Felicity Jones
A sweet tale set around the Wigan soul scene of the 1970s, with several well-realised and acted characters and a storyline, rich in period authenticity, that, alas, runs out of steam towards its disappointing end … but the journey is still worth the effort.
Joe (Compston) works as a delivery boy in Stoke for Brendan (Shortt) and hits the local hot spots at night, where he falls under the spell of Jane (Burley) who is his key to the Wigan scene … though will long-time friend Mandy (Jones), living on the edge of his life with yearning in her hopeful heart, be the one to choose?
A decent little film that certainly captures the period.
