'Scott Pilgrim v The World' doesn’t quite deliver

Video and computer games geeks will certainly love Edgar ‘Shaun of the Dead’ Wright’s screen version of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s cult graphic novels, but if you’re not into that strange world this might be disappointing since at best it’s a curate’s egg: good in parts.

There is plenty of hectic action – the film is billed as an epic – and some excellent jokes but the overly-busy graphics – characters named on screen, split screen, captions – begin to annoy.

Cera, playing his customary nerdy character, is a resting rock band member who falls for the sexy, if flawed, charms of Ramona (Winstead) but to win her heart and hand he has to fight, and destroy, her seven ex-boyfriends … in video game manner.

It’s a clever film to be sure, but one that doesn’t quite deliver on its promise.
