Guns, violence and little else in ‘The Expendables’
Director: Sylvester Stallone
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Eric Roberts
A macho, all-action film where the writing, acting and plotline matter not a single jot … what does matter for Stallone fans is that he delivers exactly the sort of mindlessly violent fare that they expect.
If you go expecting anything other than blazing guns, exploding buildings, chases and non-stop pace and violence that ultimately numbs the mind you’ll be disappointed in a film that gathers some of genre’s big names and sets them loose.
The plot is zero-level simple: a group of mercenaries head off to a South American island to sort out a dictator … but if all the frantic action could have been written around them nipping to the nearest shop for a bottle of milk it would have served just as well since the action is paramount.
It’s not by any means a great film but somehow it doesn’t matter, it will find its own audience level.
