Tim Burton is still working on an animated ‘Addams Family’ movie.

Producer Christopher Meledandri admitted work on the film – which will be based on the original Charles Addams comics, not the subsequent TV series – is still in the early stages, but they are hopeful the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ filmmaker will be able to helm the project.

He told ComingSoon.net: "It's all very, very early, but we are developing with Tim Burton directing in mind. We're just now at the story phase.”

Meledandri also confirmed the film is planned for stop motion, rather than computer-generated animation, but admitted it is still undecided whether the movie will be shot in black and white or colour.

He added: “Stuff has been written as though we are doing it in black and white, but that's not correct. It's not incorrect, but it's not correct. We haven't gotten to that point."

The Addams Family – parents Gomez and Morticia, children Pugsley and Wednesday, Uncle Fester, Grandmama and Cousin It – are a wealthy clan who are obsessed with the macabre and don’t realise how they are viewed by other people.

They first appeared in cartoon form in The New Yorker in 1938 and appeared on TV for the first time in 1964.

Two movies were released, ‘The Addams Family’ in 1991 and ‘Addams Family Values’ in 1993.

A third film, planned for 1994, was scrapped following the death of actor Raul Julia, who played Gomez.
