Cannes Festival to screen 'Wall Street' sequel

The long-awaited sequel to 1980s hit film 'Wall Street' screens at the Cannes Film Festival today.

Oliver Stone’s 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' sees Michael Douglas reprise his Oscar-winning role as corporate raider Gordon Gekko, creator of the mantra “greed is good”.

British newcomer Carey Mulligan plays Gekko’s estranged daughter Winnie, while Shia LaBeouf co-stars as a young Wall Street trader investigating the death of his mentor.

Set in 2008, the film tackles the subject of economic downturn and follows Gekko as he tries to rebuild his career and his relationship with Winnie following a prison spell.

The movie, which is set for release in the UK in September, will be screening out of competition.

Two British films are among the 19 competing for the Palme d’Or at the 63rd festival – Mike Leigh’s 'Another Year' screens tomorrow, while Ken Loach’s last-minute addition to the Cannes line-up, 'Route Irish', will be shown next Thursday.

The festival runs until May 23.
