'A Nightmare on Elm Street' another pointless remake

Director: Sam Bayer

Cast: Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy

The 1984 original, directed by that master of horror, Wes Craven, was a classic – at least in the initial films – so why there was deemed to be a need for a remake (billed as a re-imagining) remains a mystery.

The return of the bladed-glove bloody terror of serial killer Freddie Kruger, played then by Robert Englund and now by Haley, isn’t totally bad, just not innovative enough to warrant this reinvention.

Haley is passable, but no Englund, and while the tension, menace and dark images are good, the overwhelming thought remains … why bother?
