'Foxes' restricted by poor storyline
Director: Mira Fornayova
Cast: Reka Derzsi, Rita Banczi, Jonathan Byrne, Aaron Monaghan
Cert: 16
A stranger in a strange land is left alone by her deserting boyfriend and must cope with the consequences.
Not an easy task when the central character, Bekta (Derzsi), is in such a constant rollercoaster of conflicting emotions.
This joint Irish-Czech drama, set in Dublin, tries to shine a light on what it’s like to be that stranger – strange stranger – in Ireland and though it is a game attempt director Fornayova finds it difficult to steer the story to a satisfying conclusion.
Bekta falls on her more established sister Tina (Banczi) for support, but there is a sibling skeleton lurking in the shadows. And in the meantime the emotionally complex Bekta wanders around the seedier parts of the city.
Derzsi is, it has to be said, a fine actress but her performance is hampered by a storyline that struggles to find a worthwhile climax.
Star Rating: 3/5
