'The Ricky Gervais Show' was re-commissioned by US broadcaster HBO for a second series.

'The Ricky Gervais Show' was re-commissioned by US broadcaster HBO for a second series.

The 'Extras' star's animated television series is based on comedy podcasts and will be shown in Ireland on Channel 4 in April.

The 13-episode first series, also created by Gervais’s long-time collaborator, Stephen Merchant, and their friend, Karl Pilkington, debuted on HBO in February.

“Ricky’s hilarious show has sparked a loyal and enthusiastic following that is growing steadily throughout the season, and we’re happy to bring the show back for another season,” said Michael Lombardo, president, Programming Group and West Coast Operations, HBO.

Production on the new episodes will begin later this year and they are due to air in 2011.

Gervais said: “With this second series we would have already done as many episodes as The Office and Extras put together.

“This can run and run as long as Karl remains a global village idiot.”
