Cowell signs 'X-Factor' loser Murs

Olly Murs has been given a record contract by his ‘X Factor’ mentor Simon Cowell.

The 25-year-old wannabe pop star – who lost out in the final of last year’s reality show series to fellow contestant Joe McElderry - has signed a joint deal with the music mogul’s record label Syco Music and Epic Records.

Sonny Takhar, managing director of Simon’s label, told BBC Newsbeat: “We are thrilled to be involved with Olly. As an artist he ticks every box.”

The 25-year-old singer - who is currently performing on the nationwide ‘X Factor’ live arena tour - was mentored by the music executive throughout the 2009 series of the singing talent show.

The cheeky Essex Boy will now release his debut album through a collaborative deal between both companies – a move which the two labels are calling an industry first.

Details of when fans are likely to hear Olly’s album have yet to be confirmed, but it is believed he will have to wait until the end of 2010 to release his debut LP, to make way for Joe’s album.

The ‘X Factor’ winner’s first album is initially scheduled for autumn – to coincide with this year’s series of the show.
