A star-studded cast and two Oscar nods – for Plummer and Mirren – in this, obviously, literate story concerning the last year in the life of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.

The storyline concerns itself with the character of the writer of 'War and Peace' and his coming to terms with the compromises over his beliefs and the scheming interpretations of those around him, who want their own benefits from his work and reputation.

It has a staged feel to it, though with such a fine cast it proves not to be daunting … just sit back and enjoy the quality.

Star Rating: 4/5
