Streep wins IFTA Award for role in romcom

In the first winner announcement from The Irish Film and Television Awards, Meryl Streep has won this year’s Pantene Best International Actress Award for her performance in the romantic comedy 'It’s Complicated!'.

In doing so she has joined Irish actress Saoirse Ronan as one of only two actresses to win the same category in two consecutive years.

Meryl won the same award last year for 'Mamma Mia!' and Saoirse won best actress in a supporting role for 'Atonement' (2008) and 'Death Defying Acts' (2009).

Meryl’s popularity with the Irish public remains undiminished as thousands of them voted for her to win the sole People’s Choice category at the Awards, celebrating outstanding female talent in the film industry today.

She faced tough competition this year from fellow nominees including Penelope Cruz 'Broken Embraces', Marion Cotillard 'Nine' and Anna Kendrick 'Up in The Air'.

Commenting on her win Ms Streep said: "I am very grateful for the honour of this award."

The Awards ceremony will be held at The Burlington Hotel, Dublin tomorrow and will be broadcast live on RTE One that evening.
