'Edge of Darkness' a welcome return for Gibson

Following a recent history of unsavoury headlines, Gibson returns to the screen for the first time in eight years in this remake of a BBC drama.

Director: Martin Campbell

Cast: Mel Gibson, Danny Huston, Ray Winstone

Cert: 15

Following a recent history of unsavoury headlines, Gibson returns to the screen for the first time in eight years in this remake of a BBC drama.

He comes up with a winning performance in what tends to be an over-fussy tale of murder and big business and government collaboration and corruption.

Gibson plays Boston detective Tom Craven whose daughter has been murdered. He sets out to find out why and by whom – she worked for a shady corporation – only to run into a maze, too much of a maze, of side-tracks and red herrings and official cover-ups.

That said, this is a gritty drama that sustains interest in spite of its overly complex plotting, and Gibson has to be welcomed back to our screens.
