Episodes of the motoring programme – which is hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May – have taken eight of the top ten spaces of the most-watched shows on iPlayer in 2009.

The first episode of series 13 was viewed 1.7 million times on computers and televisions during the year, while the first instalment of series 14 was watched by 1.3 million people.

A further six episodes of the car programme were downloaded over a million times each.

As well as these huge online figures, Clarkson and his fellow presenters regularly achieve regular viewing figures of over five million.

The only others programmes to be placed in the top ten are British comedian Michael McIntyre’s stand-up series, ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ – which came fifth with 1,175,000 online views.

Comedy series ‘Gavin and Stacey’ – which was scripted by James Corden and Ruth Jones – was the 10th most-viewed programme with the first episode of their third series.

Over 729.2 million TV and radio programmes were accessed from the BBC website between January and November this year
