'Strictly' contestant arrested on assault charge

Ricky Whittle has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant and Hollyoaks actor is presently in police custody after an incident in the early hours of this morning.

Merseyside police said the arrest came after a collision between a car and a male pedestrian, who suffered minor injuries.

It is thought Ricky was the driver of the car and the pedestrian was a paparazzi photographer.

A police spokesperson confirmed: “A 28-year-old man from Billinge, Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody where he will be questioned by officers later today.

“The arrest follows an incident in which took place in Duke Street, Liverpool City Centre, in the early hours of Friday morning. The incident involved a collision with a male pedestrian.”

Early reports suggest the photographer involved was Steve Farrel, 34.

Earlier in the evening Ricky attended a leaving party for two ‘Hollyoaks’ cast members, which could have proved awkward, at it was also attended by his co-star and ex-girlfriend Carly Stenson.

The couple announced their split three weeks ago, but insisted in a statement that they are still good friends.

Ricky has since denied a romance with his ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ professional partner Natalie Lowe.

It is unclear if Ricky – one of the favourites to win ‘Strictly’ - will be able to dance on tomorrow’s show.
