Johnny Depp is in talks to join the cast of spy thriller 'The Tourist'.

The 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' actor would play an American tourist manipulated by an Interpol agent, played by Angelina Jolie, into helping track down a former lover suspected of being an international criminal.

The film has suffered an unusual number of cast and crew changes since its inception. Original director Bharat Narulli dropped out, with second director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck following suit not long after, citing "creative differences".

The pair have reportedly been replaced by 'Y Tu Mama Tambien' director Alfonso Cuaron.

Tom Cruise was also originally slated to take on Johnny's part and 'The Astronaut's Wife' actress Charlize Theron was cast in Angelina's role.

Johnny has previously said he screens his roles vigorously before accepting them, and only agrees to appear as characters he thinks are "special".

He said: "The person I represent must be somehow special. I was totally fascinated of John Dillinger in 'Public Enemies' for example - a bank robber but at the same time national hero."

'Terminator Salvation' star Sam Worthington replaced Cruise, but has now also stepped down from the production.

The original script was written by screenwriter Julian Fellowes, whose credits include 'Gosford Park'. 'The Tourist' is scheduled to begin production in February 2010.
