Lady GaGa shocked the audience at the MTV Awards overnight with a live performance of 'Paparazzi' which culminated in her pretending to stab herself while playing the piano.
She smothered herself in fake blood then ended her act by swinging from the ceiling and pretending to be dead.
Taylor Swift, who picked up the award for Best Female Video, had a more wholesome act – performing 'You Belong With Me' on stage outside the Radio City Music Hall for all the fans who had gathered outside.
Swift's acceptance speech was interrupted by rapper Kanye West who stormed on stage to declare he thought Beyonce's 'Single Ladies' video should have won.
He said: “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyonce has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”
Speaking backstage, Swift said she was delighted Beyonce had later invited her back on stage to finish her speech.
She said: “I thought it was so wonderful and gracious of her to do what she’s always done, she’s always been a great person before anything else, before the talented artist, the superstar, she’s always been a great person. I thought I couldn’t love Beyonce more before tonight and it was just wonderful.”
Describing the moment West interrupted her speech, she said: “I was standing on stage and I was really excited because I’d just won the award, and then I was really excited because Kanye West was on the stage, and then I wasn’t so excited any more after that.”
Asked if she was angry with West she said: “I don’t know him and I’ve never met him... I don’t want to start anything because I had a great night tonight.”
Despite losing out in the Best Female Video category, Beyonce took to the stage for a live performance of 'Single Ladies'.
She began the routine from the video, flanked by two other dancers as a nod to her video, in which three images of her dancing are played simultaneously. Towards the end of the number, Beyonce was joined on stage by dozens of similar dancers, all wearing metallic leotards.
Britney Spears, whose appearance at last year’s awards was widely regarded as her comeback, won the gong for Best Pop Video with her hit 'Womanizer'. She was not at the ceremony, but instead accepted the award with a pre-recorded clip.
