Doherty to perform at Jackson tribute
Singer Pete Doherty is to perform in a remake of a soul classic as part of an extravaganza telling the story of music producer David Gest, it was announced today.
The musician will make a one-off appearance with the band The Rumble Strips on October 14 at the 'David Gest .. My Life! A Musical Concert Extravaganza' show at the HMV Apollo in Hammersmith, west London.
Organisers said the artist will perform with The Rumble Strips alongside the Temptations Review featuring singer Dennis Edwards.
Gest, known for his turbulent marriage to actress and singer Liza Minnelli, and his appearance in the TV series 'I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!', was a lifelong friend of singer Michael Jackson.
Artists at the concert including Doherty will take part in a performance of Jackson’s 1983 hit 'Human Nature' in tribute to the late star.
Organisers said the show would also include the first public screening of an interview between Gest and Jackson.
The Hammersmith date is part of a UK tour of the show, after dates in Liverpool and London at the beginning of this year.
Gest said: “The tribute to my good friend Michael Jackson will be a heartfelt salute to a person who had a great presence in my life.
“I’m thrilled to be joined by an all-star line-up of performers in celebrating his remarkable life and musical achievements.
“These are the artists who inspired Michael Jackson musically as he had a great love of traditional soul music.
“Adding some of today’s contemporary musicians is just the icing on the cake.”
