A gentle and often funny chick-flick romance highlighted by terrific performances from Bullock and Reynolds.

The plot may have been reworked from a handful of previous such films but here we get much more than we perhaps expected. For 'The Proposal' think 'Green Card'.

Bullock plays tough cookie publishing tycoon Margaret, a Canadian whose work permit is about to expire. She marries her hapless assistant Andrew (Reynolds) in order to stay in New York.

You can guess the rest, of course: on a holiday to Alaska to visit his gran celebrating her 90th birthday and with the US authorities on their trail, love blossoms.

There are several half-developed sub-plots but they hardly register, it’s the love interest that keeps the film on track, helped no end by the excellent chemistry between the two leads and the consistently high entertainment value of the piece.
