‘Moon’ set for classic status
Director: Duncan Jones
Cast: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey (voice), Dominique McElligott
Cert: 15
Rockwell is one of Hollywood’s most under-used – and under-appreciated – actors but here, in what is virtually a solo tour-de-force he claims his rightful place as a performer of note in a sci-fi drama that will, surely, become a classic.
Rockwell plays Sam Bell, an astronaut working alone on the Moon during a three-year stint for a big corporation seeking fuel-efficient rocks to ship back to Earth, his only ‘companion’ a computer named GERTY (Spacey).
As he nears the end of his stay, Sam has some strange encounters and is left with the one desire to return home to his wife and child … if he can.
‘Moon’ is a deeply compelling film illustrating the nature of isolation over a long period, a film full of lonely atmosphere and human insight.
And from the always-excellent Rockwell, one of the best performances of the year.
Star Rating: 5/5
