'Fugitive Pieces' an engrossing and thought-provoking drama

Director: Jeremy Podeswa

Cast: Stephen Dillane, Robbie Kay, Rosamund Pike, Rade Serbedzija

Cert: 15

The film of the week is Podeswa’s powerful adaptation of Anne Michael’s poetically lyrical novel about loss and guilt set around young Jakob (Kay) who is hidden from the invading Germans by his Polish parents only to watch as they and his beloved sister are taken away.

He is subsequently found hiding by Greek archaeologist Athos (Serbedzija) and taken to safety in Greece, eventually moving as an adult to Canada where he becomes a writer (now played by Dillane).

It is here that he considers his tragic past and wonders if he could have saved his sister, his guilt springing from thoughts of why he survived.

It is a stunningly moving, if slow-paced, drama but made magnificent by the thoughtful directing and outstanding acting from every single member of the cast in a story that never lets up on the emotions.
