The 'Hell's Kitchen' contestants have experienced mixed emotions in the wake of 'Shameless' actor Jody Latham's departure.

He became the first celebrity to get the boot after failing to redeem himself in the wake of a blazing row with other trainee chefs.

Latham - who plays Lip Gallagher in the Channel 4 show - continued his erratic behaviour by jumping over a fence when chef Marco Pierre White said he could relate to him.

TV presenter Anthea Turner was surprised she had avoided the chop on Sunday night, commenting: "I absolutely thought that I was going ... I have to be honest that not having Jody here it is calmer."

But Miss Dynamite - aka Niomi MacLean-Daley - "missed his energy", while model Danielle Bux felt the absence of the "noise of Jody".

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar seemed to agree, noting: "Since Jody's gone the atmosphere is a little of a lull, you know, slowed down."

The seven remaining contestants were distracted by the task of recreating dishes from their childhoods.

South African-born Grobbelaar explained: "I've got some maize meal, chicken's feet and cabbage. This is what my mother's house boy used to cook us when we came home from school."

Teary-eyed, he said later: "When I cooked that dish this morning it was for the houseboy that brought me up with my mother, he was like a father to me."

Grant Bovey, Anthea Turner's property consultant husband, cooked fish and chips and was likewise moved to tears in an emotional trip down memory lane.

"I was raised in Nottingham and my brother and myself would get dispatched to the chip shop at least once a week to go and get this meal for the family," he said.

"We were a close family unit and unfortunately I lost my parents when I was relatively young, and sometimes that's difficult because I've had an interesting life.

"I just find it quite difficult to talk about my mum and dad, because in the big stuff that's happened to me in my life, they haven't been here and I've really missed them."

White told the celebrities he enjoyed all of their stories, but particularly Grobbelaar's dish and "the whole ritual of eating it".

He also revealed a new twist to the show's format - naming comedian Adrian Edmondson and Ms Dynamite as the next day's leaders, with the power to choose their own teams.

'Hell's Kitchen' is on ITV at 9pm tonight.
