Hollywood Walk of Fame honour for Harrison

Late Beatle George Harrison will be honoured with the unveiling of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today.

The singer-songwriter will become the 2,382nd name to be commemorated on the streets of Los Angeles, near to where fellow Beatle John Lennon’s plaque lies.

Harrison’s widow Olivia and son Dhani will attend the ceremony outside the Capitol Records building.

The Beatles’ guitarist died in 2001 following a battle with cancer. A concert held the following year in his memory saw his former band mates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr perform alongside Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne of the Travelling Wilburys – one of Harrison’s other bands.

Harrison is the second Beatle to be honoured individually on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 1988, Lennon received a star on Vine Street, just down from where his former band mate will be remembered today. McCartney has been approved for a star, but no date has been fixed yet for a ceremony. There are no current plans to recognise Starr in a similar fashion, according to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

The Beatles have also been honoured as a group, with a Hollywood star offered as a gift to their fans during a 1998 ceremony.

Harrison’s honour comes as Capitol and EMI announce plans for the release of a new posthumous album by the guitarist.

Film-maker Martin Scorsese is currently directing a documentary feature about Harrison’s life and work.
