‘Religulous’ funny, but not for the easily offended
Director: Larry Charles
Cast: Bill Maher, Francis Collins, Steve Burg
A documentary decidedly not for the religious as Maher goes in search of answers to why people have faith … in so many daft and twisted beliefs.
Faith, belief and religion don’t come out of this jokey journey too well, since there is much emphasise on the wilder fringes of just about everybody’s religion.
At least the film is even-handed: Christians (of every possible colour), Jews, Muslims, Scientologists and all the rest are made, by and large, to look downright stupid. Most of them, it has to be said, don’t help their own causes at all by coming over as, well, downright stupid.
It will, as intended, doubtless offend a lot of people but it will, as equally intended, give plenty of people pause for thought about the things we believe it.
