‘Tyson’ likely to appeal to fight fans only

Director: James Toback

Cast: Mike Tyson

A curious documentary in that it brings us the troubled heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson in the form of a lengthy – not to say non-stop – talk-in.

It is spliced with archive footage of his often brutal ring battles, but still doesn’t reveal much about him.

This, then, is a film only the dedicated fight fan would wish to sit through. Those not interested in the sport but who know about Tyson from the lurid headlines about his rollercoaster private life, lived constantly in the glare of publicity, will be none the wiser about what makes him tick.

As a film, there are some clever uses of the split screen and the fights themselves will thrill and chill in equal measure, but there is still much to be discovered about the man himself.
