A note written by Beatles legend John Lennon complaining about the lack of security at the New York apartment where he was eventually shot dead is selling for $54,000 (€42,595).

Lennon aired his concerns to his aide Fred Seaman about access to his home at the historic Dakota building on Manhattan's Central Park West on April 28, 1980.

Just seven months later, on December 8, 1980, he was shot dead in front of the building.

Lennon wrote: "Explain to me why we are sleeping here with a front door that any nut can open (it doesn't lock). People know I'm here..."

The handwritten note is being sold on momentsintime.com, reports the New York Post.
