Smith adds to growing reputation with moving ‘Seven Pounds’

Smith brings us another of his removed-from-the-world characters in a powerful if complex drama of redemption.

Smith plays Ben Thomas, an Inland Revenue agent with a tragic family past who sets out to investigate, and if they prove worthy, assist seven individuals, an act of kindness brought about by meeting heart transplant patient Emily (Dawson).

The film is packed with mystery – why is he following this curious Merchant of Venice plot? – and consistently looks good, often quite beautiful.

Smith continues to polish his reputation with a layered performance.

A strong and moving drama but one you’ll need to follow closely.
