Tom Cruise has opened up about his controversial behaviour during two high profile US TV interviews in 2005 - insisting he could have "handled things better".

The actor came stunned fans by leaping on a couch on Oprah Winfrey's daytime talk show to proclaimed his love for then-girlfriend Katie Holmes, and joking refers to the incident as "My year of jumping dangerously," in an interview with People magazine.

In a separate incident, Cruise got into a heated exchange with Matt Lauer on 'The Today Show', calling psychiatry "pseudo science" and publicly criticising actress Brooke Shields over her use of medication to treat post-natal depression.

Cruise tells People: "All I want is to help people. I could have communicated it in a way that was better, no question.

"I think I could have handled things better."

The actor is scheduled to reappear on 'The Today Show' for another interview with Lauer on Monday.
