Taoiseach Brian Cowen is to unveil a life-size bronze statue of the late Joe Dolan in the singer's home town later today.

Around 10,000 fans are expected to descend in Mullingar to pay tribute to the showband star who died last Christmas.

The life and legacy of the entertainer has been honoured over the last three days with the Joe Dolan Celebration Weekend seeing Mullingar honour its most famous son.

The highlight will be the unveiling of the statue by the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, together with members of Dolan's family, including his brothers Ben, Paddy and Vincent and sisters Imelda and Dympna.

Capturing the performer in a trademark stage pose, it was specially commissioned by Westmeath County Council and Mullingar Town Council.

Dolan's band mates from throughout his career will also take centre-stage and play a selection of his hits, with Dolan himself back appearing on big screens.

Gardaí have warned that the town centre will be closed to through traffic from 7am until 6pm.

Mr Cowen said since Dolan's untimely death last December, he has been acknowledged nationally and internationally for his wonderful contribution to the world of music and entertainment.

"His loss to the music sector is much lamented by his many fans everywhere," he said.

"Every effort is being made to make this a day to remember and fitting of the legacy that Joe has left to the town of Mullingar."
