UK scientists launch games console weight-loss study
Sports scientists in England are to study whether a computer games console can help cut child obesity.
In a research project launched today, University of Derby experts will see if time spent on the Nintendo Wii – a console controlled remotely by players’ physical movements – helps primary school pupils lose weight.
Exercise physiology lecturer Dr Michael Duncan said: “There is a lot of discussion that video games are bad for your health and we hope this research will determine if playing on this equipment could actually have physical benefits for children.”
The study will ask pupils to wear a pedometer-style device that monitors the amount of energy they expend.
