Ronan comes of age in 'City of Ember'

This Tom Hanks-produced children’s adventure shot in Belfast is a triumph for the film industry in Ireland … and a thrilling treat too.

Director: Gil Kenan

Cast: Bill Murray, Martin Landau, Saoirse Ronan, Tim Robbins, Liz Smith

This Tom Hanks-produced children’s adventure shot in Belfast is a triumph for the film industry in Ireland … and a thrilling treat too.

The story is set in an underground city of lights and glitter suddenly faced with impending disaster when the once mighty generator begins to fail.

With the lights flickering and doom around the corner it’s up to a couple of teens to seek the remedy in an exciting race against time.

It’s the sort of fast-paced actioner that will appeal to adults and children alike – amazing what the local industry can now provide to the world’s moviemakers – and in the excellent Saoirse Ronan, Ireland has a young star of outstanding ability to place alongside a collection of Hollywood elite.

Star Rating: 4/5
