Once the golden boy of Hollywood, handsome actor Joe Scott (Daniel Craig) has fallen out of favour, seduced by a hedonistic lifestyle of sex, booze and narcotics.

Heading for the beach with a bottle of alcohol one day, Joe revisits the trials and tribulations of his youth in a 70s British seaside town, exploring his burgeoning sexuality with local girl Ruth (Felicity Jones) and succumbing to the advances of married neighbour Evelyn (Jodhi May).
