'Eden Lake' a passable chiller

Director: James Watkins

Cast: Bronson Webb, Kelly Reilly

Steve wants to propose to his sweet girlfriend Jenny and picks what he thinks is the ideal romantic spot, a lake surrounded by trees. Well, right away you know he’s made a mistake - a big mistake!

Their love-nest camp is invaded by a gang of loutish youths who steal, plunder, burn, threaten and torture.

Jenny takes off to find help and is chased through the woods by the gang … as you know she would.

It's a passable horror, but like all such films you wonder right from the telegraphed start why the chief characters would even consider selecting such a location. OK, if they didn't there wouldn't be a film, but you get the meaning.

Reilly and Webb, first encountered as a giggly couple of innocents, are good as the hapless pair and the louts are suitably nasty so the film manages to stumble its way through the undergrowth to emerge as a slightly above-average chiller.

Star Rating: 3/5
