Electric Picnic working to achieve 'eco-librium'
Organisers at Electric Picnic are aiming to make this year's festival low in carbon emissions and as eco-friendly as possible.
A statement read: "In the light of responsibility we all have to address our impact on climate change, POD Concerts and Aiken Promotions have announced details of a range of environmental measures to be implemented at this years’ Electric Picnic.
"As well as the introduction of a large number of eco-friendly initiatives for this year’s Picnic, 2008 marks the launch of a long term sustainability strategy to make the Electric Picnic one of the most low-carbon festivals in the world.
"It is now vital that we understand the carbon footprint of all of our activities. The reduction of carbon emissions is a vital way of reducing our carbon footprint. As such the strategy for the Electric Picnic includes measuring, reducing and offsetting the carbon emissions from the festival, and ultimately creating a low carbon Electric Picnic.
"This process will not only examine the carbon emissions of the event, but will also put in place a wide range of sustainability measures. These include reducing energy use, facilitating sustainable transport, minimising waste and promoting recycling, maximising health and wellbeing and communicating this message coherently throughout the festival. "
A new area, the Global Green, has been created at this year’s festival. This will be the place at the festival to relax and reflect. The area will feature Amnesty’s Tea and Bingo Hall, eco-fashion, demonstrations of renewable energy such as wind and solar power, Trócaire, Friends of the Earth, green crafts, and the launch of the EmissionZero carbon calculator.
