Rolling Stones sign long-term record deal

The Rolling Stones and Universal Music Group have signed an exclusive, long-term, worldwide recording deal, it was announced today, the eve of Mick Jagger's 65th birthday.

The veteran rockers had been stalwarts of record label EMI, which has already seen the departures of massively popular acts such as Radiohead and Paul McCartney.

The new pact covers future albums by the Rolling Stones and the "single most iconic catalogue in rock and roll", including albums such as 'Sticky Fingers' and 'Black And Blue'.

New recordings by the Rolling Stones will be released by UMG's Polydor label through UMG companies around the world.

The band said in a statement: "Universal are forward thinking, creative and hands-on music people.

"We really look forward to working with them."

Full digital and physical rights are part of the agreement, and UMG will begin planning what they said was an unprecedented, long-term campaign to reposition the Rolling Stones' entire catalogue for the digital age.

"There is no question that the Rolling Stones are one of the most important bands in music history," stated Doug Morris, chairman and CEO of UMG.

"Their musical style and off-stage swagger have been emulated by countless others.

"Having worked closely with them during my days at Atlantic Records, I am thrilled to be reunited with these seminal musicians who have set the bar for all rock bands in their paths.

"I couldn't be happier that they've chosen UMG as their partner for what will certainly be the next chapter in their already storied career."

David Joseph, chairman/CEO of Universal Music UK, said: "The Rolling Stones are, and will continue to be, the definition of everything that is rock and roll.

"It is an honour to work with them."

EMI said: "EMI wishes the Rolling Stones well in their new venture and looks forward to a continuing relationship with the band through their long-term agreement with EMI Music Publishing.

"EMI Music will only ever conclude mutually beneficial agreements with its artists."
