Downey Jr shines in disappointing 'Charlie Bartlett'
Director: Jon Poll
Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Anton Yelchin, Hope Davis
Cert: 16
Downey Jr is certainly getting the work these days to underscore a remarkable career comeback, though in this indifferent college tale you wonder why he took the role … the money helps, we suppose.
Bartlett, played by Yelchin, is a sort of Ferris Bueller who finds himself, after a troubled previous, at a public school run by Downey. Bartlett has street-smarts and soon becomes top dog, what with the charm and his ability to deliver the necessary drugs.
Troubles lies in his falling for Downey’s sexy daughter and the resulting battle between the two men.
It’s a film that promises much but ultimately delivers less than expected.
Good performances can’t hide a screenplay that runs out of steam into the second half.
Star Rating: 2/5
