'Honeydripper' not one of Sayles’ best

Director: John Sayles

Cast: Danny Glover, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Charles S. Dutton, Mary Steenburgen

Cert: PG

This is not one of Sayles’ best films, but from the king of the independents anything is to be welcome.

Here he brings us a busy little story full of rich characters.

Glover plays the owner of a struggling nightclub – of the title – who hires a promising young musician to boost takings and see off a rival club.

There are, of course, complications along the way – musician falls for Glover’s daughter and there are problems with the local lawman – and all are handled in the excellent Sayles manner.

It does lag a little in the middle, but you can never really find fault with a Sayles story.
