Winehouse cautioned for assault

Amy Winehouse was today cautioned for common assault after being questioned by police.

The troubled singer spent the night in a cell at Holborn police station in central London after being arrested.

She was held after she went to the police station voluntarily yesterday to be questioned over an assault.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said today: "She has left the police station. She has been cautioned for common assault.''

Her departure, apparently by a back exit from the police station, gave the slip to reporters, photographers and camera crews camped at the front.

Reports said she was accused of attacking two men in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 24-year-old was alleged to have headbutted a Good Samaritan who hailed her a taxi outside a bar.

She was also said to have punched a second person in the face.

Yesterday a spokesman for the singer said she would be attending voluntarily by appointment with the police.

He understood she would be questioned over an alleged incident in London in the early hours of April 23.

She arrived at the police station shortly before 5.10pm in a silver people-carrier and, after a delay of two minutes, she emerged from the vehicle and walked rapidly up the steps flanked by minders and representatives.

She had originally been expected at 3pm.

The star, who was wearing a yellow t-shirt and grey skirt, did not speak as she headed into the police station.

On Thursday it emerged that Winehouse, whose husband Blake Fielder-Civil is in jail awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, is worth ÂŁ10m.

Her dishevelled appearance and erratic behaviour have sparked renewed concerns about her wellbeing.

In February, it appeared that things were turning around for her when she won five prizes at the Grammy awards, despite being absent from the ceremony.

The Brit Award-winner’s problems began to spiral publicly last year.

She was admitted to hospital last August after a reported overdose of heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and alcohol.

Fans were shocked to see the 'Back to Black' singer bloodstained and covered in scratches, wearing blood-soaked ballet shoes, and with bruises to her neck, bandages on her arms and make-up smeared down her face after she quit rehab with her husband.

Winehouse was recently caught on video apparently smoking crack cocaine at her east London home.

The singer, the daughter of a north London taxi driver, married Fielder-Civil in Miami, Florida, in May last year.

Her father, Mitch Winehouse, once said he was so concerned about his daughter he wrote a eulogy he expected to deliver at her funeral.

The beehived-star, currently recording the theme tune for the next James Bond film, recently received three nominations for the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting awards.

She became the first artist to receive two nominations for the top prize, Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
