Doherty jailed for 14 weeks

After multiple arrests, numerous charges, and more let-offs that he might have expected, Pete Doherty was finally jailed today.

The 29-year-old singer was given a 14-week sentence for possessing class A drugs.

The charges were originally brought following his arrest in May last year.

Doherty was first arrested for possessing drugs in October 2005.

He has repeatedly admitted possession of class A drugs, but pledged to kick the habit.

As a result, he has faced non-custodial sentences, such as drug rehabilitation orders and community punishments.

Today's sentence reflects his failure to mend his ways and the court finally losing its patience with him.

The singer-songwriter first came to our attention when his relationship with supermodel Kate Moss first became public three years ago.

Until then he was a little known member of promising indie band The Libertines and had in 2004 been voted top of music magazine NME's cool list.

He was jailed first in 2003 after admitting burgling bandmate Carl Barat's flat. His sentence, originally six months, was reduced to two on appeal.

The band fell out with Doherty over his drug use, but after his release they made up and he sought help from a Thai drug clinic.

His drug use continued however and he split from the Libertines to form Babyshambles, and the group released two albums.

Their touring schedule was severely affected by Doherty's run-ins with the law, however.

His drug habit reportedly also led to the end of his relationship with Miss Moss.

The courts hoped he could mend his ways, but his downward spiral continued and with his jailing today his last chances appear to have run out.
